Angular Velocity To Linear Velocity Formula
The following equation is used to covert angular velocity to linear velocity.
VL = VA * R
- Where VL is the linear velocity (m/s)
- VA is the angular velocity (rad/s)
- R is the radius (m)
To calculate linear velocity from angular velocity, multiply the angular speed by the radius.
| Angular Speed (rpm) | Linear Speed (m/s) |
|---|---|
| 10 | 1.047 |
| 20 | 2.094 |
| 30 | 3.142 |
| 40 | 4.189 |
| 50 | 5.236 |
| 60 | 6.283 |
| 75 | 7.854 |
| 90 | 9.425 |
| 100 | 10.472 |
| 120 | 12.566 |
| 150 | 15.708 |
| 180 | 18.850 |
| 200 | 20.944 |
| 240 | 25.133 |
| 300 | 31.416 |
| 360 | 37.699 |
| 450 | 47.124 |
| 600 | 62.832 |
| 900 | 94.248 |
| 1200 | 125.664 |
| *Assumes radius r = 1.00 m. v = ωr with ω = 2π(rpm)/60. At r = 1 m: 1 rpm ≈ 0.10472 m/s. For other radii, multiply all m/s values by r (in meters). | |
How to Calculate Linear Velocity from Angular Velocity?
Example Problem:
The following example outlines the steps and information needed to calculate Linear Velocity from Angular Velocity.
First, determine the angular velocity. In this example, the angular velocity is found to be 60 rad/s.
Next, determine the radius. For this problem, the radius is found to be 100 m.
Finally, calculate the linear velocity using the formula above:
VL = VA * R
VL = 60 * 100
VL = 6000 m/s
