Ball Speed to Swing Speed Formula
The following formula is used to calculate the ball speed, swing speed, or efficiency based on the other two variables.
BS = SS \times \frac{E}{100}Variables:
- BS is the ball speed (e.g., mph, km/h, or m/s)
- SS is the swing speed (e.g., mph, km/h, or m/s)
- E is the efficiency as a percentage (e.g., 150% corresponds to a smash factor of 1.50)
To calculate the ball speed, multiply the swing speed by (efficiency/100). To find the swing speed, divide the ball speed by (efficiency/100). To determine the efficiency, divide the ball speed by the swing speed and multiply by 100.
| Ball Speed (mph) | Swing Speed (mph) | Swing Speed (km/h) | Swing Speed (m/s) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | 40.000 | 64.374 | 17.882 |
| 70 | 46.667 | 75.103 | 20.862 |

| *Assumes efficiency = 150% (smash factor = 1.50). Formula: Swing Speed = Ball Speed ÷ (Efficiency/100). Conversions: 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h = 0.44704 m/s. | |||
What is Ball Speed to Swing Speed?
Ball speed to swing speed is a measure of impact efficiency, commonly expressed as the ratio of ball speed to swing speed (often called smash factor). It is used in sports like golf (ball speed ÷ clubhead speed) and baseball (exit velocity ÷ bat speed) to describe how effectively speed is transferred at impact. This value is often shown as a decimal (e.g., 1.50) or as a percentage (e.g., 150%), and values above 100% can be normal.
How to Calculate Ball Speed to Swing Speed?
The following steps outline how to calculate the ball speed, swing speed, or efficiency.
- First, determine the ball speed (BS).
- Next, determine the swing speed (SS).
- Next, determine the efficiency (E).
- Finally, calculate the missing variable using the formula BS = SS × (E/100).
- After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.
Example Problem :
Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.
Ball Speed (BS) = 150 mph
Swing Speed (SS) = 100 mph
Efficiency (E) = 150%
