Ball Strike Ratio Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the ball-to-strike ratio (balls divided by strikes).

BSR = B/S

Variables:

  • BSR is the ball strike ratio
  • B is the number of balls
  • S is the number of strikes

To solve for a missing count using the ratio definition, you can rearrange the formula (for S > 0): B = BSR × S and S = B / BSR (for BSR > 0). If you also know total pitches T = B + S, then S = T / (1 + BSR) and B = T − S.

What is a Ball Strike Ratio?

The ball strike ratio is a measure used in baseball to evaluate a pitcher’s control. It represents the proportion of balls to strikes thrown by a pitcher (B/S). A lower ratio indicates better control, because it means the pitcher is throwing more strikes relative to balls. Coaches and analysts often use this as one quick indicator of how consistently a pitcher is getting strikes versus missing the zone.

How to Calculate Ball Strike Ratio?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Ball Strike Ratio.

  1. First, determine the number of balls (B).
  2. Next, determine the number of strikes (S).
  3. Finally, calculate the ratio using BSR = B ÷ S (S must be greater than 0).
  4. (Optional) Calculate total pitches using T = B + S, and then compute ball/strike percentages from B/T and S/T.
  5. After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Total Pitches (T) = 50

Balls (B) = 20

Strikes (S) = 30

Ball Strike Ratio (BSR) = B ÷ S = 20 ÷ 30 ≈ 0.67

Ball Percentage = 20 ÷ 50 = 40% and Strike Percentage = 30 ÷ 50 = 60%
