Baseball Fielding Percentage Formula
Fielding percentage measures successful credited chances as a share of total credited chances. Major League Baseball defines successful chances as putouts plus assists:
PO is putouts, A is assists, and E is errors. The calculator accepts player or team totals as long as all three inputs use the same statistical scope.
Total Chances and Zero Denominators
Total chances equal putouts plus assists plus errors. When all three values are zero, no fielding percentage exists; displaying zero percent would imply failed opportunities that never occurred. The calculator therefore reports the zero-chance case as undefined.
Successful Chances Needed for a Target
Target mode adds hypothetical error-free chances and solves this inequality:
The result is rounded up to a whole chance and verified. If an error is already present, a perfect 100 percent cumulative rate cannot be recovered with any finite number of later successful chances.
Example
A fielder with 100 putouts, 50 assists, and five errors has 150 successful chances in 155 total chances. Dividing 150 by 155 gives 96.774 percent.
Interpretation and Limitations
- Use official scoring totals because whether a play is charged as an error is a scorer’s decision.
- Fielding percentage does not measure range, positioning, arm strength, throw difficulty, or balls a defender never reaches.
- Players at different positions face different types and levels of difficulty, so raw percentages need context.
- Target mode is a mathematical scenario and does not predict future defensive opportunities.
