How the Bike Helmet Size Calculator Works
This calculator compares head circumference with an explicit adult or youth reference chart. It returns all containing labels when ranges overlap instead of forcing one size at a boundary.
The adult example uses 51–55 cm small, 55–59 medium, 59–63 large, and 63–65 extra large. Youth bands are 45–51 extra small, 49–55 small, and 50–57 universal youth. These are manufacturer reference patterns, not a cross-brand standard.
Helmet Size Lookup

Both endpoints are inclusive, so a measurement exactly on a shared boundary can return two labels. That is deliberate: shell shape, pads, retention system, hair, and the exact model decide the better fit.
Choosing the Right Inputs
Wrap a flexible tape horizontally around the widest part of the head, across the brow and above the ears. Keep it level and snug without compressing the skin. Repeat the measurement and use the larger consistent reading.

Understanding Your Results
The result is either one candidate label, multiple overlapping labels, or a clear notice that the measurement lies outside the reference chart. Reverse mode shows the circumference range for a chosen label.
A correct shell should sit level and low on the forehead, feel snug without painful pressure, and stay in position when the fastened retention system is checked according to the manufacturer instructions.
Worked Example
An adult head circumference of 57 cm falls inside the 55–59 cm reference band, so the calculator returns M. Exactly 55 cm returns S or M because both bands include that boundary.
Common Mistakes
Do not measure high on the forehead, pull the tape loose, convert inches mentally, buy by age alone, or assume a size label transfers between models. Do not rely on the rear dial to compensate for the wrong shell size.
Assumptions and Limitations
The calculator cannot assess head shape, pressure points, strap routing, shell coverage, certification, crash damage, recalls, or whether a helmet remains secure. U.S. bicycle helmets must meet CPSC requirements, and maximum protection requires correct fit, positioning, fastening, and manufacturer instructions.
