Bricks Per Square Foot Formula

The calculator uses three formulas depending on the mode you choose.

Brick size mode (find density from a brick's dimensions):

Bricks/ft² = 144 / ((L + J) × (H + J))
  • L = exposed brick length (in)
  • H = exposed brick height or width (in)
  • J = mortar joint thickness (in); use 0 for dry-laid pavers
  • 144 = square inches per square foot

Project total mode (find total bricks needed):

Bricks = (A_gross − A_openings) × D × (1 + W/100)
  • A_gross = project length × height (ft²)
  • A_openings = doors, windows, or cutouts (ft²)
  • D = bricks per square foot
  • W = waste allowance (%)

Count and area mode (find density from known counts):

Bricks/ft² = N / A
  • N = number of bricks installed
  • A = area covered (ft²)

The size formula assumes a uniform mortar joint on both length and height edges, which matches how brick "modules" are dimensioned. Cuts at corners, returns, and special shapes are handled through the waste percentage, not the base formula.

Worked Example

You're bricking a 20 ft long, 8 ft tall wall with one 3 ft × 5 ft window, using modular bricks at 6.86 per square foot, with 10% waste.

  1. Gross area: 20 × 8 = 160 ft²
  2. Window: 3 × 5 = 15 ft²
  3. Net area: 160 − 15 = 145 ft²
  4. Base bricks: 145 × 6.86 = 994.7
  5. With waste: 994.7 × 1.10 = 1,094.2 → order 1,095 bricks

FAQ

Why does my count differ from the supplier's? Suppliers may quote slightly different module sizes or assume different joint thicknesses. A 3/8 inch joint is standard in the U.S.; metric specs often use 10 mm.

Do I count both sides of a wall? Yes for veneer on both faces. The calculator gives bricks for one face. Double the result for a two-sided veneer or a solid double-wythe wall.

Does joint thickness really matter? Yes. Going from 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch joints drops modular brick density from 6.86 to about 6.43 per ft², roughly 6% fewer bricks per area.
