Estimate gross energy for quietly lying awake while receiving a massage, using a resting proxy, or for actively giving massage while standing. The receiving estimate does not measure extra calories caused by massage. Both choices show total kcal and kcal per minute.

Massage Calories Formula
This calculator uses body weight, duration at the selected reference and a MET value to estimate gross energy, including resting energy.
Variables:
- C = estimated gross energy in kcal (food Calories)
- W = body weight in kilograms; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg
- D = minutes at the selected reference; hours are converted to minutes
- MET = the selected activityโs metabolic-equivalent reference value
Massage Factor Values
- Receiving, quietly lying awake: 1 MET as a resting proxy, equivalent to 0.0175 kcal/kg/min under this conversion.
- Giving massage while standing: 5.5 MET, equivalent to 0.09625 kcal/kg/min.
- The receiving choice estimates quiet resting energy, not a measured effect of massage or additional calories above rest.
- Count only active standing massage work for the giving choice; exclude breaks and inactive time.
- These are reference estimates, not calibrated light, moderate or vigorous massage pace settings.
Receiving vs. Giving Massage
The 2024 Adult Compendium lists standing massage-therapist work (11485) at 5.5 MET and quietly lying awake (07011) at 1 MET. Quiet lying is used here only as a receiving-massage proxy. These adult 19โ59 population references do not measure personal metabolism; applying a fixed rate to longer durations is a linear extrapolation, not evidence of a sustained workload.
How to Calculate Calories Burned During Massage
- Enter your body weight and select pounds or kilograms.
- Choose the receiving quiet-lying proxy or active giving massage while standing. There are no separate pace tiers.
- Enter minutes or hours at the selected reference. For giving massage, exclude breaks and inactive time.
- Select Calculate to see estimated gross kcal and kcal per minute.
Typical Calories Burned During Massage
For a 155 lb person, the reference model gives the following gross estimates. Totals use unrounded rates and are displayed to two decimal places:
- Receiving quiet-lying proxy (1 MET): about 1.23 kcal per minute, 36.91 kcal in 30 minutes and 73.82 kcal in 60 minutes.
- Giving massage while standing (5.5 MET): about 6.77 kcal per minute, 203.01 kcal in 30 active minutes and 406.02 kcal in 60 active minutes.
- The receiving totals represent gross resting energy; they do not show an additional calorie burn from the massage itself.
- The standing-provider totals apply only to active work at the stated reference; they are not guaranteed totals for every massage session.
Example Calculation
Body weight: 180 lb
Duration: 60 minutes
Massage type: Giving massage while standing (5.5 MET)
Convert 180 lb using 180 ร 0.45359237 = 81.6466266 kg. Estimated gross energy for 60 active minutes is 5.5 ร 3.5 ร 81.6466266 รท 200 ร 60 โ 471.51 kcal, with an estimated rate of 7.86 kcal per minute. The calculation uses the unrounded converted weight and rate.
