Ceramic Weight Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the Ceramic Weight of a rectangular piece using its volume and material density.

CW = L \times W \times T \times \rho

Variables:

  • CW is the Ceramic Weight (lbs)
  • L is the length of ceramic (in)
  • W is the width of ceramic (in)
  • T is the thickness of ceramic (in)
  • ρ is the ceramic bulk density (lb/in³)

How to Calculate Ceramic Weight?

The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Ceramic Weight.

Example Problem #1

  1. First, determine the length of ceramic (in).
    • The length of ceramic (in) is calculated to be : 10.
  2. Next, determine the width of ceramic (in).
    • The width of ceramic (in) is measured to be: 5.
  3. Next, determine the thickness of ceramic (in).
    • The thickness of ceramic (in) is found to be: 3.
  4. Next, determine the ceramic density (ρ).
    • Assume a typical bulk density for standard ceramic tile: ρ = 0.076 lb/in³.
  5. Finally, calculate the Ceramic Weight using the formula above:

CW = L * W * T * ρ

The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.

CW = 10 * 5 * 3 * 0.076 = 11.4 (lbs)

Example Problem #2

The variables required for this problem are provided below:

length of ceramic (in) = 5

width of ceramic (in) = 5

thickness of ceramic (in) = 2

ceramic density (ρ) = 0.076 lb/in³

Test your knowledge and check your answer with the calculator.

CW = L * W * T * ρ = (lbs)
