Chest to Waist Ratio Formula
The chest to waist ratio compares your chest measurement to your waist measurement. The calculator converts chest and waist measurements to the same unit before calculating the ratio.
CTWR = C / W
To calculate chest when waist and ratio are known:
C = CTWR * W
To calculate waist when chest and ratio are known:
W = C / CTWR
- CTWR = chest to waist ratio
- C = chest measurement
- W = waist measurement
The chest and waist measurements must be in the same unit before the ratio is calculated. If you enter one value in inches and the other in centimeters or millimeters, the calculator converts both measurements to inches internally, performs the calculation, then returns the missing measurement in the unit you selected.
- Find ratio: enter chest and waist to calculate CTWR = C / W.
- Find chest: enter waist and ratio to calculate C = CTWR * W.
- Find waist: enter chest and ratio to calculate W = C / CTWR.
Chest to Waist Ratio Reference Ranges
Chest to waist ratio is often used as a simple body proportion measurement. The table below gives general interpretation ranges, not medical or fitness standards.
| Chest to Waist Ratio | General Meaning |
|---|---|
| Less than 1.00 | Waist is larger than chest |
| 1.00 | Chest and waist are the same size |
| 1.10 to 1.25 | Chest is moderately larger than waist |
| 1.25 or higher | Chest is much larger than waist |
Measurement Unit Conversions
Use the same body position and tape measure placement each time you measure. The calculator supports inches, centimeters, and millimeters.
| Conversion | Value |
|---|---|
| 1 inch | 2.54 centimeters |
| 1 inch | 25.4 millimeters |
| 1 centimeter | 0.3937 inches |
| 1 millimeter | 0.03937 inches |
Example Calculations
Example 1: Calculate chest to waist ratio
You have a chest measurement of 42 inches and a waist measurement of 34 inches.
CTWR = 42 / 34 = 1.2353
The chest to waist ratio is 1.2353.
Example 2: Calculate waist from chest and ratio
You have a chest measurement of 100 cm and a chest to waist ratio of 1.20.
W = 100 / 1.20 = 83.3333 cm
The waist measurement is 83.3333 cm.
FAQ
How do you measure chest and waist for this ratio?
Measure your chest around the fullest part of the chest while keeping the tape level. Measure your waist around the narrowest part of your torso, or at the natural waist if that is easier to repeat. Keep the tape snug but not compressed against the skin.
Does the chest to waist ratio have units?
No. The ratio has no unit because it divides one length by another length. A ratio of 1.20 means the chest measurement is 1.20 times the waist measurement, regardless of whether you measured in inches, centimeters, or millimeters.
Why do I need to enter exactly two values?
The relationship has three variables: chest, waist, and ratio. Any two of them determine the third. If you enter fewer than two values, there is not enough information. If you enter all three, there is no missing value to calculate.
