How the Cleat Position Calculator Works
This calculator prioritizes a directly measured first-metatarsal, or ball-of-foot, landmark. It subtracts a chosen rearward setback to create a target pedal-axle line measured from the heel.
A shoe-size fallback is included because the planned keyword calls for it, but the fallback deliberately returns a wide window. It estimates foot length from the selected sizing convention, uses a 70–75% heel-to-ball band, and subtracts a 0–5, 5–10, or 10–15 mm axle-setback band.
Cleat Fore-Aft Starting Method

The output describes the desired pedal-axle line relative to the heel, not the location of a brand-specific cleat bolt or molded sole mark. Cleat-to-axle geometry differs by pedal system.
Choosing the Right Inputs
For the preferred method, locate the first metatarsal joint at the base of the big toe, mark it on the shoe, and measure from a repeatable heel reference. Enter the desired amount the pedal axle should sit behind that line. Measure each foot separately.

Understanding Your Results
Measured mode leads with a target axle coordinate and a small trial window. Shoe-size mode leads with a much wider window and explicitly asks the user to replace it with an anatomical mark.
Moving the cleat rearward places the foot farther forward over the axle. Make small, symmetric-or-intentionally-asymmetric changes, record the original position, and verify engagement and release before riding.
Worked Example
A ball-of-foot mark 190 mm from the heel with a 5 mm rearward setback gives a target pedal-axle line of 185 mm from the heel, with a 182.5–187.5 mm trial window.
Common Mistakes
Do not treat shoe size as anatomy, use the cleat bolt center as if every pedal axle lies there, copy one foot automatically to the other, or change fore-aft, rotation, and stance width all at once.
Assumptions and Limitations
The calculator does not determine cleat rotation, lateral position, stance width, float, release tension, leg-length accommodation, or a medically appropriate setup. Shimano manuals specify finite fore-aft and lateral adjustment ranges and require provisional setup, engagement practice, final adjustment, and correct tightening.
