Club Loft Distance Formula
The club loft distance calculator uses a simple estimated carry-distance model. It converts distance to yards, swing speed to miles per hour, and loft to degrees before applying the formula.
To solve for swing speed:
To solve for loft angle:
- D = estimated distance in yards
- S = swing speed in mph
- L = club loft angle in degrees
- K(L) = estimated yards per mph based on loft
If distance is missing, the calculator multiplies swing speed by the loft-based factor. If swing speed is missing, it divides distance by the loft-based factor. If loft angle is missing, it rearranges the distance formula into a quadratic equation and solves for the loft angle.
Typical Club Loft Ranges and Estimated Distance Factors
| Club type | Typical loft range | Estimated K(L), yards per mph |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | 8° to 12° | About 2.36 to 2.43 |
| Fairway wood | 13° to 20° | About 2.03 to 2.22 |
| Mid iron | 24° to 34° | About 1.68 to 1.93 |
| Short iron | 35° to 45° | About 1.43 to 1.65 |
| Wedge | 46° to 60° | About 1.12 to 1.40 |

Example Calculations
Example 1: Estimate distance
You have a swing speed of 95 mph and a club loft of 10.5°.
The estimated distance is about 217.18 yards.
Example 2: Estimate swing speed
You hit a 30° club 160 yards and want to estimate the swing speed.
The estimated swing speed is about 89.89 mph.
FAQ
Does club loft alone determine golf distance?
No. Loft is only one part of the result. Actual distance also depends on ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, strike location, shaft delivery, weather, turf, ball type, and whether you are measuring carry distance or total distance. The calculator gives an estimate based on loft and swing speed, not a launch monitor measurement.
Why does higher loft usually produce a shorter estimated distance?
Higher loft sends more of the ball’s energy upward instead of forward. It can also create more spin. In this model, the distance-per-mph factor decreases as loft increases, so the same swing speed produces a shorter estimated distance with a higher-lofted club.
What should you enter for swing speed?
Enter the swing speed for the specific club you are estimating, not necessarily your driver swing speed. Many golfers swing shorter clubs slower than their driver, so using driver speed for every club can overestimate distance.
