Calculate coal cost, total coal units, or cost per unit by entering any two values, with unit options for tons, kilograms, and pounds.

Coal Cost Calculator

Enter any 2 values to calculate the missing variable

Coal Cost Formula

The coal cost calculator uses the relationship between total coal quantity, total coal cost, and cost per unit of coal.

CC = TU * CPU
TU = CC / CPU
CPU = CC / TU
  • CC = total coal cost, in dollars
  • TU = total units of coal
  • CPU = cost per unit of coal

The calculator lets you enter any 2 values and solves for the missing one.

  • If you enter total units of coal and cost per unit, it calculates the total coal cost.
  • If you enter total coal cost and cost per unit, it calculates the total units of coal.
  • If you enter total coal cost and total units of coal, it calculates the cost per unit.

When you choose kilograms or pounds, the calculator converts the quantity to tons for the calculation, then converts the answer back to the unit you selected. Cost per unit is handled the same way, using dollars per ton as the base unit.

Coal Unit Conversion Reference

The calculator uses tons as the base quantity unit. The conversions below show how the selected units are handled.

Unit Conversion to Tons Conversion from Tons
Ton 1 ton = 1 ton 1 ton = 1 ton
Kilogram 1 kg = 0.001 ton 1 ton = 1,000 kg
Pound 1 lb = 0.000453592 ton 1 ton = 2,204.62 lb

Cost per Unit Conversion Reference

These conversions are useful when the coal price is quoted in a different unit than the coal quantity.

Price Unit Equivalent in $/ton Example
$/ton Multiply by 1 $80/ton = $80/ton
$/kg Multiply by 1,000 $0.08/kg = $80/ton
$/lb Multiply by 2,204.62 $0.0363/lb ≈ $80/ton

Example Coal Cost Calculations

Example 1: Calculate total coal cost

You have 25 tons of coal at a price of $92 per ton.

CC = 25 * 92
CC = 2300

The total coal cost is $2,300.

Example 2: Calculate cost per unit

You paid $4,500 for 50 tons of coal.

CPU = 4500 / 50
CPU = 90

The cost per unit is $90 per ton.

Coal Cost Calculator FAQ

What does coal cost mean?

Coal cost is the total amount paid for a quantity of coal. It is calculated by multiplying the amount of coal by the price per unit. For example, if coal costs $85 per ton and you buy 10 tons, the total coal cost is $850.

Can the calculator use kilograms or pounds?

Yes. You can enter the coal quantity in tons, kilograms, or pounds. You can also enter the price as dollars per ton, dollars per kilogram, or dollars per pound. The calculator converts the units before solving the missing value.

Why do I need to enter exactly 2 values?

The formula has 3 related values: total units of coal, coal cost, and cost per unit. If you enter exactly 2 of them, the missing value can be calculated. If you enter only 1 value, there is not enough information. If you enter all 3 values, there is no missing value to solve.
