Cost Per Pill Formula

The basic cost per pill formula divides the total cost by the number of pills:

CPP = TC / P

To calculate total cost instead, multiply the cost per pill by the number of pills:

TC = CPP * P

To calculate the number of pills, divide the total cost by the cost per pill:

P = TC / CPP

When different currencies are selected, the calculator first converts cost values to USD, performs the calculation, then converts the result back to the selected output currency:

Cost_USD = Cost_Entered * Currency_Conversion_Factor
  • CPP = cost per pill
  • TC = total cost
  • P = number of pills
  • Cost_USD = cost converted to USD before calculation
  • Currency_Conversion_Factor = the exchange factor used for the selected currency

If you enter total cost and number of pills, the calculator finds cost per pill. If you enter cost per pill and number of pills, it finds total cost. If you enter total cost and cost per pill, it finds the number of pills. Exactly two values are needed because the third value is calculated from them.

Example 2: Find total cost

A pill costs $0.75 and you need 60 pills. Use the formula:

TC = CPP * P

FAQs

What is cost per pill?

Cost per pill is the price of one pill. It is found by dividing the total cost by the number of pills. For example, if a bottle costs $20 and contains 50 pills, the cost per pill is $0.40.

Should shipping, tax, or fees be included in total cost?

Include them if you want the true out-of-pocket cost per pill. If you only want to compare listed product prices, leave shipping, tax, or extra fees out. Use the same method for every option you compare.

Can the number of pills result be a decimal?

Mathematically, yes. In real use, pill counts are usually whole numbers. If the calculator returns a decimal number of pills, round only if that makes sense for your situation, and remember that rounding changes the total cost slightly.
