The following equation is used to calculate the days lived when the birthday and specified date are provided.
- Where DOL represents the days lived
- BD is the birthday
- SD is the specified date
Days lived is the specified Gregorian calendar date minus the birth date, using the same UTC time of day for both dates before dividing the millisecond difference by 86,400,000. This counts calendar-day boundaries, independent of daylight-saving time, rather than completed 24-hour periods from the time of birth. The birth date itself is 0 elapsed days. The secondary inclusive life-day number adds 1 and explicitly uses birth day 1; clinical conventions can differ.
