Golden Room Ratio Formula
The golden room ratio compares the long side of a room to the short side. A true golden ratio is approximately 1.618, but the calculator can also solve for any room ratio you enter.
R = L / W
L = W * R
W = L / R
- R = room ratio, found by dividing the long side by the short side
- L = length, the longer side of the room
- W = width, the shorter side of the room

What is the golden room ratio?

Does a room have to match 1.618 exactly?
No. In real rooms, walls, doors, furniture, closets, and building limits often prevent an exact ratio. A ratio near 1.6 is usually close enough if your goal is a golden-rectangle layout.
Why should the longer side be entered as length?
The ratio is normally defined as long side divided by short side. This keeps the ratio at 1 or greater.
