Estimated weight (lb) = heart girth (in)² × body length (in) ÷ 330

What This Estimate Represents

This tool implements the commonly used 330-divisor equation for adult light riding horses. Heart girth is squared and multiplied by body length, with both measurements expressed in inches. The result is in pounds, then converted to kilograms. It estimates body mass from two measurements; it does not measure body condition or determine an ideal target weight.

Measuring Heart Girth

Stand the horse square on a level surface. Measure the circumference around the barrel immediately behind the withers and elbows using a flexible tape. Keep the tape snug against the coat without compressing the body. Record the measurement with the horse standing calmly, and repeat it if the tape slips or the horse changes posture. Use the same measurement procedure when tracking change over time.

Measuring Body Length

Measure from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock as described by the tape-equation method. This is not saddle length, height at the withers, or a measurement along the topline. Consistency in the endpoints matters. A helper can make it easier to hold the tape at the intended points without approaching the horse in an unsafe position.

Worked Example

A heart girth of 70 inches and body length of 69 inches give 70 × 70 × 69 ÷ 330 = 1,024.545 lb. Multiplying by 0.45359237 gives 464.726 kg. The main result rounds this to 464.7 kg, and the secondary weight rounds to 1,024.5 lb. The same measurements entered as 177.8 cm and 175.26 cm produce the same unrounded result.

Why Girth Measurement Matters

Because girth is squared, an error in girth affects the estimate more strongly than the same proportional error in body length. A 1% increase in girth with unchanged length increases the estimate by about 2.01%. A 1% increase in length increases it by 1%. The Calculation details sensitivity table shows the result with girth one inch smaller and one inch larger while keeping length fixed. They are examples of measurement sensitivity, not statistical confidence limits.

Converting Between Inches and Centimeters

Select inches or centimeters independently for each measurement. Centimeters are divided by 2.54 before the 330-divisor equation runs. This approach keeps the same formula across mixed-unit inputs. Do not enter centimeter measurements directly into an inches-based equation or swap in a different published metric divisor; that would change the model. The final pounds-to-kilograms conversion uses 0.45359237 exactly.

Tracking Measurements

Keep the date, girth, length, units, and measurement method with each result. Repeat readings under similar conditions and look for a consistent trend instead of interpreting a single small difference as a real change in body mass. Rounding to one decimal place makes results readable, but the tape method does not establish accuracy to a tenth of a kilogram.

Limits of the Tape Equation

Foals, growing youngsters, draft breeds, unusual body shapes, and horses in markedly different condition may need a different validated equation. The input bounds of 20–120 inches are practical entry checks, not proof that this equation is validated across that entire range. Use a suitable livestock scale when an accurate weight is important, including decisions about medication dosing. Evaluate condition separately from estimated weight.
