What the Percentage Means

A percentage expresses the combined carried load relative to the horse weight entered. The default is 20%. It is a starting guideline for discussion, not a measured maximum for an individual horse. University of Minnesota Extension describes the 20% guideline alongside conformation, fitness, rider balance, workload, saddle fit, and hoof care. The calculator cannot assess those factors from body weight alone.

Include All Carried Equipment

The percentage budget includes the rider and all equipment carried on the horse. Add the saddle, pad, bridle, saddlebags, and other carried items to the tack entry. A 100 kg total-load budget with 10 kg of equipment leaves 90 kg for the rider. It does not allow a 100 kg rider plus a further 10 kg of tack. Weigh the equipment together when possible.

Use an Appropriate Horse Weight

Use an appropriate ideal body weight for the horse. Extra body fat should not be treated as a reason to increase the rider allowance. A tape-based body-weight estimate describes estimated current mass; it does not determine ideal condition or back strength. A qualified equine professional can help assess ideal condition and the suitability of a particular horse-and-rider pairing.

Three Ways to Compare the Same Relationship

Rider allocation subtracts tack from the selected percentage budget. Reference horse weight rearranges the equation: (rider + tack) × 100 ÷ chosen percentage. Load percentage divides the actual combined load by the entered horse weight. The reference-weight result is algebra for the scenario, not a recommendation to select any horse above that weight. The chosen-percentage input accepts 1% through 30%; those are calculator limits, not an approved carrying range.

Worked Example

For a 500 kg ideal horse weight and a 20% scenario, the combined-load budget is 100 kg. Subtracting 10 kg of tack gives a 90 kg rider allocation, or approximately 198.42 lb. Alternatively, an 80 kg rider with 10 kg of tack makes a 90 kg actual load, equal to 18% of 500 kg. At a chosen 20%, that same 90 kg load corresponds algebraically to a 450 kg reference horse weight.

When Tack Uses the Whole Budget

If tack equals the percentage budget, the remaining rider allocation is zero. If tack exceeds it, the tool still reports zero rider allocation and separately shows the excess equipment weight. For example, a 100 kg horse-weight entry at 10% creates a 10 kg budget. With 12 kg of tack, the equipment is 2 kg above that budget. A negative rider weight would not be a meaningful output.

Units and Rounding

Horse, rider, and tack entries each have a kilograms or pounds selector. Each value is converted independently using 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, so mixed input units are supported. Calculations use the unrounded values, while displayed weights use up to two decimal places, with very small results shown in scientific notation. Display precision should not be mistaken for biological precision.

Use the Result in Context

Consider the horse’s condition and the planned work as well as the arithmetic. Duration, terrain, speed, balance, and equipment fit can change the demands of carrying the same load. Do not treat a result below the default percentage as a clearance to ride a horse with pain, lameness, poor conditioning, or unsuitable tack. Review the pairing with an experienced equine professional when suitability is uncertain.
