Estimate thigh circumference from height, or height from thigh circumference, using inches, centimeters, feet, or meters for mid-thigh measurements.

Typical adult range: ~120–245 cm (48–96 in). Double-check your units if your number is outside this range.
Measure around the thigh at mid-thigh (halfway between hip and knee) while standing relaxed. Typical adult range: ~30–100 cm (12–40 in).

Thigh-to-Height Proportion Estimator Formula

The estimator uses a simple proportion where thigh circumference is treated as 30% of height. The calculation is done in inches first, then converted back to your selected unit.

T = H * 0.30
H = T / 0.30
R = T / H
  • T = thigh circumference
  • H = height
  • R = thigh-to-height ratio
  • 0.30 = the rule-of-thumb multiplier used by the estimator

If you enter height and leave thigh circumference blank, the estimator uses T = H × 0.30.

If you enter thigh circumference and leave height blank, the estimator uses H = T ÷ 0.30.

The ratio form, R = T ÷ H, shows the underlying proportion. A 0.30 ratio means the thigh circumference is 30% of height. This is a general aesthetic proportion, not a medical or health standard.

Unit Conversions and Typical Input Ranges

The estimator converts all entered values to inches before applying the formula.

Input unit Converted to inches by multiplying by Used for
Inches 1 Height, thigh circumference
Centimeters 0.393701 Height, thigh circumference
Feet 12 Height only
Meters 39.3701 Height only

Value Typical adult range used by the estimator What to check if outside the range
Height 48 to 96 in, about 120 to 245 cm Check whether you selected inches, feet, centimeters, or meters correctly.
Thigh circumference 12 to 40 in, about 30 to 100 cm Check the measuring location and whether you selected inches or centimeters.

Example Calculations

Example 1: Estimate thigh circumference from height

You enter a height of 68 inches and leave thigh circumference blank.

T = 68 * 0.30 = 20.4

The estimated thigh circumference is 20.4 inches.

Example 2: Estimate height from thigh circumference

You enter a thigh circumference of 55 cm and leave height blank.

First convert 55 cm to inches:

55 * 0.393701 = 21.6536

Then divide by the multiplier:

H = 21.6536 / 0.30 = 72.1787

The estimated height is 72.1787 inches, or about 183.33 cm.

FAQ

How should you measure thigh circumference?

Measure around the thigh at mid-thigh, halfway between the hip and the knee. Stand relaxed, keep the tape level, and avoid pulling it so tight that it compresses the skin. Use the same measuring location each time if you are comparing measurements.

Is the 0.30 thigh-to-height proportion a health standard?

No. The 0.30 multiplier is a general rule-of-thumb proportion used for fitness or aesthetic estimates. It does not diagnose health, body composition, strength, or risk. Body proportions vary naturally by genetics, sex, training history, and measurement method.

Why do you have to leave one field blank?

The estimator solves for the missing value. If you enter height, it calculates thigh circumference. If you enter thigh circumference, it calculates height. Entering both values would not leave an unknown value for the formula to solve.
