What This Estimator Calculates
This tool compares two positions within a stated scored class. A positive difference means the finish was better than the expectation you entered. A negative difference means it was worse, and zero means it matched. The displayed gain or loss signal is conditional on that supplied baseline. The calculator does not derive an official expected finishing position from your iRating, compute rating points, or reproduce the iRacing rating algorithm.
Enter the Relevant Field
Use the number of drivers in the scored class rather than automatically using the entire multiclass grid. Enter an actual finishing position or a hypothetical position to explore. Lower finishing-position numbers mean better results. The class must contain 2 to 200 drivers, the finish must be a whole number within that field, and the expected position may be fractional but must stay within the same range.
Worked Example
Suppose a class has 20 drivers, you supply an expected finish of 10th, and the actual finish is 6th. The difference is 10 − 6 = 4 positions above your baseline. The tool displays a gain indication by that baseline. Dividing 4 by the 19-position span and multiplying by 100 gives 21.053 percentage points of the possible position span. That normalized comparison is not an iRating percentage change, probability, percentile rank, or count of rating points.
Why the Expectation Matters
If the same sixth-place finish is compared with an expected third place, the difference becomes −3 and the signal reverses. Neither supplied expectation is established as correct by the calculator. Car number, qualifying position, championship rank, and a simple field midpoint are not automatically interchangeable with an official rating-based expectation. Entering one of those values as a scenario does not validate it as the official baseline.
Official Rating Context
iRacing describes iRating as a skill measure used in matchmaking. Its published explanation connects rating gains or losses with results relative to expectations based on driver ratings and field strength. That principle motivates this comparison, but the user-supplied expectation here can differ from the official one. This tool therefore cannot establish even the actual sign of an official change, much less its point amount. Use official session results for the recorded rating change.
Interpret the Output as a Scenario
Use the result to describe how a finish compares with a chosen expectation: four places better, three places worse, or level. Changing field size affects the normalized position-span result, while the direct difference stays the same if both positions are unchanged. The calculator does not model individual opponents, incident penalties, disqualifications, race eligibility, category-specific history, or opponent-to-opponent rating transfers. A zero direction signal does not guarantee an unchanged official rating.
