L Plate Hours Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the L plate hours for a given set of driving hours.

T = S + P + B + C

Variables:

  • T is credited total driving hours
  • S is actual supervised hours without an instructor
  • P is actual instructor lesson hours
  • B is supported instructor bonus credit and C is already-approved course credit

Add actual supervised and instructor hours, supported instructor bonus and already-approved course credit. Remaining hours are the applicable minimum minus credited hours, with a minimum of zero. Check night hours separately; they form part of total hours.

What are L Plate Hours?

L plate hours refer to the hours of driving practice that a learner driver (L plater) accumulates while driving under supervision. These hours are part of the requirements for obtaining a full driving license. Learner practice must meet the licensing authority’s supervision rules. Actual instructor hours and eligible bonus or course credits may count under jurisdiction-specific rules; independent driving is not counted here. The goal is to ensure that the learner driver gains sufficient experience and skills to drive safely and confidently on the road.

How to Calculate L Plate Hours?

The following steps outline how to calculate the L Plate Hours.

  1. First, select the jurisdiction and age basis: ACT uses age when Ls were issued; NSW, VIC, QLD and WA use age when progressing/testing. TAS uses the modern novice 80-hour pathway.
  2. Enter actual supervised day and night hours without an instructor.
  3. Enter eligible instructor hours and any course credit already approved in your logbook. QLD night lessons count either as actual night hours or for triple daytime credit, never both. ACT/TAS require the approved credited night total.
  4. Select Progress and credits, Hours remaining or Practice schedule, complete the visible fields, and select Calculate. A schedule estimates average practice time; it does not determine test eligibility.
  5. After inserting the values and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem : 

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

Example: NSW learner under 25, actual supervised day hours = 60 and night hours = 10.

Eligible instructor day hours = 5 and night hours = 2; actual hours = 77.

Instructor bonus = 14 hours; already-approved Safer Drivers Course credit = 20 hours.

Credited total = 111 hours; credited night = 12 hours. Remaining: 9 total hours, including at least 8 night hours. Other licence requirements still apply.
