Enter the length and width of a sheet of material into the calculator to determine the MSI (mil-square inches)

MSI Formula

The following formula is used to calculate MSI.

MSI = L* W /1000
  • Where MSI is the mil square inches (1000 square inches)
  • L is the length of the material (inches)
  • W is the width of the material (inches)

To calculate MSI, multiply the length and width, both in inches, then divide by 1000.

MSI Definition

What is MSI?

MSI is short for mil-square inches and is a unit of measure that is equal to 1000 square inches.

This term is most often used in the field of printing when looking at total print areas. Some other common terms used are MMSI, which is a unit of 1 million square inches, and MSF which is a unit of 1000 square feet.

Example Problem

How to calculate MSI?

  1. First, determine the total length of the sheet of print material.

    For this example, the sheet used will be 15 inches long.

  2. Next, determine the total width of the sheet of material.

    In this case, the width is measured to be 12 inches wide.

  3. Finally, calculate the MSI.

    Using the formula above, the MSI is calculated to be:
    MSI = L* W /1000
    MSI = 12* 15 /1000
    MSI = .18

In this example problem, the length and width are given as units of inches. If the units were provided in another unit, for example, feet, you would need to convert it to inches before using the formula.

For example, if the sheet was 1.2 feet by 1.5 feet, you would multiply each dimension by 12 to get the resulting inches.
