Plastic Weight Formulas

The following formulas are used to calculate the weight of Plastic in different shapes.

Plastic Flat Sheet Weight Formula = L * W * H * d

Plastic Round Bar Weight Formula = pi * D^2/4 * L * d

Plastic Square Hollow Tube Weight Formula = [W^2-(W-2T)^2] * L * d

Plastic Round Hollow Tube Weight Formula = pi * (Do^2 – Di^2)/4 * L * d

Plastic Square Angle Weight Formula = (2*W*T – T^2) * L * d

Plastic T Bar Weight Formula = [W*T + (H-T)*T] * L * d

Plastic C Channel Weight Formula = [2*W*T1 + (H-2*T1)*T2] * L * d

Variables used in these equations:

  • L is the length
  • W is the width (or leg width/flange width, depending on the shape)
  • H is the height (or thickness for flat sheet, and overall height for T bar / C channel)
  • d is the density
  • D is the diameter (solid round bar)
  • Do is the outer diameter (round hollow tube)
  • Di is the inner diameter (round hollow tube)
  • T is the thickness (sheet thickness, wall thickness, etc.)
  • T1 is the channel flange thickness
  • T2 is the channel web thickness

The units used in all calculations on the calculator are inches for lengths and lbs/in^3 for density. You can use any consistent unit system as long as the density unit matches the length unit (so the computed result is in the same “lb” unit used by the density). For example, if you change lengths to feet, use density in lb/ft^3; if you use meters, use density in kg/m^3 (and the result will be in kg).
