Build a symmetric plate stack for a target barbell weight, or total the plates already loaded on each side.
How the Plate Loading Calculator Works
The calculator subtracts the bar and total collar weight, splits the remaining payload evenly, and composes each side from the selected preset. If the target falls between achievable loads, the result names the actual load and difference instead of treating the request as exact.
Formula or method: plate payload = target total – bar – collars; required per side = payload / 2; total from setup = bar + collars + 2 x the per-side plate sum
Choose the Inputs That Match Your Goal
Choose the preset before entering a target or the counts already on one side. Pound gym defaults to a 45 lb bar and no collar weight. IPF defaults to a 20 kg bar with 5 kg of collars in total. IWF adds a 15 kg or 20 kg bar choice. The advanced fields override the preset bar or collar weight without changing the plate list.
| Preset | Default bar | Default collars | Available plates per side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pound gym | 45 lb | 0 lb | 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 lb |
| IPF metric | 20 kg | 5 kg total | 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg |
| IWF metric | 20 or 15 kg | 5 kg total | 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5 kg |
Read the Result in Context
The plate stack comes first in target mode, followed by the achieved total, the requested total, the signed difference, exact-versus-rounded status, and plate counts. Setup mode leads with total loaded weight and shows the same bar, collar, and per-side accounting.
Worked Example
For a 225 lb target with a 45 lb bar and zero-weight collars, the 180 lb plate payload becomes 90 lb per side. Two 45 lb plates per side produce exactly 225 lb. For an IPF-style 137 kg target without collars, the nearest standard stack produces 137.5 kg, so the calculator reports the positive 0.5 kg difference.
Assumptions and Practical Limits
Stacks are symmetric and plate availability is treated as unlimited. The tool does not authorize one-sided loading, mix units within a preset, or silently substitute a 15 kg bar for a 20 kg bar. Custom equipment weights change the accounting but do not change the preset plate denominations.
