How the Progressive Overload Calculator Works
Use the forward schedule to see where a fixed or compounded increase leads, or solve backward for the increase size or number of increases required by a target. Step 0 is the current load, so eight increases create nine displayed rows through Step 8.
Formula or method: required fixed increment = (target – current) / increases; fixed load at n = current + n x increment; compounded load at n = current x (1 + percent / 100)^n
Choose the Inputs That Match Your Goal
Required-increase mode needs current load, a higher target, and the number of planned changes. Target mode needs the size of each fixed or percentage change. Schedule mode removes the target and projects a selected number of increases. Advanced rounding changes only the displayed usable loads; compounded math continues from the unrounded values.

Read the Result in Context
The requested unknown appears first. Ending raw and usable loads, total gain, target difference, and every schedule step follow. A negative target difference means the step is still below the goal; a positive value means it has passed it.
Worked Example
Moving from 100 lb to 140 lb in eight fixed increases requires 5 lb each time. A separate 2.5% compounded progression from 100 kg passes 120 kg on the eighth increase at about 121.84 kg before plate rounding.
Assumptions and Practical Limits
The tool models load changes only and does not infer fatigue, exercise technique, readiness, or an appropriate progression speed. Compounded steps always build from the prior unrounded mathematical value, preventing plate rounding from creating hidden drift.
