How the Rest Between Sets Calculator Works
The calculator uses a visible planning table rather than a single unexplained number. Goal determines the general recovery demand, and exercise type adjusts the range for high-demand compound work or lower-demand accessory work. Workout mode then converts the range into total rest and elapsed block time.

Recommendation mode needs only goal and exercise type. Workout mode adds whole sets per exercise, the number of exercises, and average active set duration. The midpoint is shown as a neutral starting value, not as a uniquely optimal prescription.

Read the Result in Context
The recommended range and midpoint come first. Workout mode adds the number of actual between-set rest events, active lifting time, total rest range, and full block-duration range. Because the calculation uses sets minus one, a one-set exercise correctly creates no between-set rest.
Worked Example
Five compound strength sets across three exercises create 12 rest events. With 30-second sets, active time is 450 seconds. Applying the 180- to 300-second range produces a block estimate of 43:30 to 67:30. Four accessory hypertrophy sets across four exercises at 40 seconds each produce 22:40 to 34:40.
Assumptions and Practical Limits
The duration model excludes exercise setup, equipment changes, travel between stations, and unplanned delays. The lookup ranges are transparent planning bands, not universally optimal rest prescriptions, and lifters may move within or beyond them when performance or schedule demands it.
