Rate Per Km Formula
The calculator has three modes. Each mode converts distance to kilometers when needed, then calculates the cost per kilometer or total trip cost.
Total\ Cost = Distance_{km} \times Rate_{per\ km} + Fixed\ FeesRate_{per\ km} = \frac{Total\ Cost - Fixed\ Fees}{Distance_{km}}Effective\ Rate_{per\ km} = \frac{Total\ Cost}{Distance_{km}}Fuel\ Cost = Fuel\ Needed \times Fuel\ Price
Fuel\ Needed = \frac{Distance_{km}}{Fuel\ Efficiency_{km/L}}Tire\ Cost_{per\ km} = \frac{New\ Tire\ Cost + Retread\ Cost + Service\ Cost}{Total\ Kilometers}- Total Cost is the full trip cost, including distance-based cost and fixed fees.
- Distancekm is the trip distance in kilometers.
- Rateper km is the base charge for each kilometer.
- Fixed Fees include tolls, parking, loading fees, or other flat charges.
- Effective Rateper km is the final average cost per kilometer after fixed fees are included.
- Fuel Needed is the amount of fuel required for the trip.
- Fuel Price is the price per liter, or a converted price from gallons.
- Total Kilometers is the distance covered by the tire investment.
Trip Rate mode calculates total cost, rate, or distance when you enter the other needed values. It also shows the effective rate per kilometer and per mile.
Fuel Cost mode estimates fuel needed, fuel cost, total cost, and effective rate. It supports km/L, L/100km, US mpg, and Imperial mpg.
Tire Cost mode divides total tire investment by total kilometers to find tire cost per kilometer.
Common Unit Conversions For Per Km Costs
| Conversion | Formula | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Miles to kilometers | miles × 1.609344 | Converts trip distance to km. |
| Kilometers to miles | km ÷ 1.609344 | Shows the equivalent cost per mile. |
| Rate per mile to rate per km | rate per mile ÷ 1.609344 | Compares mile-based and km-based rates. |
| Rate per km to rate per mile | rate per km × 1.609344 | Converts a km rate to a mile rate. |
Costs Commonly Included In A Rate Per Km
| Cost type | Usually variable or fixed? | Where to enter it |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Variable | Use Fuel Cost mode. |
| Tolls and parking | Fixed | Enter as fixed fees. |
| Tires | Variable over long distance | Use Tire Cost mode. |
| Loading or service fee | Fixed | Enter as fixed fees. |
Examples
Example 1: Calculate total trip cost
You drive 250 km at a base rate of $0.80 per km. You also pay $15 in tolls.
Total cost = 250 × 0.80 + 15
Total cost = $215.00
Effective rate = 215 ÷ 250 = $0.86 per km
Example 2: Calculate fuel cost per km
You drive 300 km. Your vehicle gets 12 km/L. Fuel costs $1.60 per liter. There are no fixed fees.
Fuel needed = 300 ÷ 12 = 25 L
Fuel cost = 25 × 1.60 = $40.00
Effective rate = 40 ÷ 300 = $0.13 per km
FAQ
What is rate per km?
Rate per km is the cost for each kilometer traveled. If your trip costs $100 and the distance is 200 km, the rate is $0.50 per km. If the trip includes fixed fees, the effective rate per km may be higher than the base driving rate.
What is the difference between base rate and effective rate?
The base rate is the amount charged for each kilometer before fixed fees. The effective rate includes the full trip cost divided by distance. Use the effective rate when you want the real average cost per kilometer.
Should tolls and parking be included in the rate per km?
Include tolls, parking, and other fixed fees if you want the total trip cost spread across the full distance. Leave them out if you only want the vehicle running cost or base transport rate.
