Real Hourly Wage Formula
The calculator measures what one hour of your working life actually pays. It divides your pay, net of work-related costs, by every hour the job really takes from you:
RHW = (P - C) / (Hs + Hc + Hu)
For comparison, the nominal hourly wage counts only scheduled hours and ignores costs:
NHW = P / Hs
Variables:
- RHW is your real hourly wage, in dollars per hour of total work-related time
- P is gross annual pay: your salary, or hourly rate * scheduled hours per week * weeks worked per year
- C is annual work-related costs: 12 * monthly spending on commuting, parking, work clothes, meals out, and childcare you only pay because of the job
- Hs is scheduled annual hours: scheduled hours per week * weeks worked per year
- Hc is annual commute hours: round-trip minutes per day / 60 * work days per week * weeks worked per year
- Hu is annual unpaid extra hours: off-the-clock hours per week spent on prep, emails, and similar work * weeks worked per year
The idea, popularized by the book “Your Money or Your Life”, is that a job is a trade of life energy for money, and the true exchange rate is worse than your paycheck suggests. The commute, the unpaid overtime, and the spending the job forces on you all belong in the trade. Choose how you are paid at the top of the calculator: in salary mode P is your annual salary, while in hourly mode the tool builds P from your rate, scheduled hours, and weeks worked.
A real hourly wage is useful in three common situations: comparing two job offers where the higher salary comes with a longer commute, deciding whether a move or remote role that changes your commute is worth it, and pricing purchases in hours of your life. At a $20 real wage, a $300 purchase costs 15 hours of work, which is a more honest question than whether you can afford it.
The advanced option applies an estimated effective tax rate t so you can see an after-tax real wage. The calculator computes it as (P – C) * (1 – t) / (Hs + Hc + Hu), where t is entered as a percentage. Because taxes vary by state, filing status, and deductions, treat that version as a rough planning number.

Example 1: Salaried worker with a one-hour daily round trip.
You earn $75,000 per year, work 40 scheduled hours per week for 50 weeks, commute 60 minutes round trip on 5 days each week, and spend $250 per month on work-related costs.
Nominal hourly wage: NHW = 75,000 / (40 * 50) = 75,000 / 2,000 = $37.50 per hour.
Commute time is 60 / 60 * 5 = 5 hours per week, so true annual hours are (40 + 5) * 50 = 2,250. Annual costs are 250 * 12 = $3,000, so net-of-costs pay is 75,000 – 3,000 = $72,000.
RHW = 72,000 / 2,250 = $32.00 per hour. That is $5.50 below the nominal wage, a drop of about 14.67 percent.
Example 2: Hourly worker with unpaid extra time.
You earn $20.00 per hour for 40 scheduled hours per week across 50 weeks, so gross pay is 20 * 40 * 50 = $40,000. Your round trip is 45 minutes on 5 days per week, you put in 2 unpaid hours per week, and work costs run $150 per month.
Commute time is 45 / 60 * 5 = 3.75 hours per week. True annual hours are (40 + 3.75 + 2) * 50 = 2,287.5. Net-of-costs pay is 40,000 – 1,800 = $38,200.
RHW = 38,200 / 2,287.5 = $16.70 per hour, about 16.5 percent below the $20.00 nominal rate.

Is this the same as an inflation-adjusted real wage?
No. Economists use “real wage” to mean pay adjusted for inflation, which tells you how purchasing power changes over time. This calculator uses the personal-finance meaning: pay adjusted for the extra time and out-of-pocket costs a job requires today. The two share a name but answer different questions, and this tool makes no adjustment for price changes from year to year.
