What Heart-Rate Recovery Means Here
Heart-rate recovery is the numerical decrease from the peak exercise heart rate to a heart rate measured after a defined recovery interval. This calculator supports a 1-minute or 2-minute reading and reports both the absolute drop in beats per minute and the drop as a percentage of the recorded peak.
The arithmetic is descriptive: heart-rate drop = peak heart rate – recovery heart rate. Percentage drop is drop ÷ peak heart rate × 100. The calculator also shows the recovery reading as a percentage of peak.
Why the Recovery Procedure Must Be Recorded
A result is meaningful only with its test and recovery context. Walking during an active cool-down is not the same condition as standing, sitting, or lying down. Research comparing recovery procedures has found materially different heart-rate responses across active and passive postures.

Worked Examples
If peak heart rate is 180 bpm and the 1-minute recovery reading is 150 bpm, the drop is 30 bpm. The percentage drop is 30 ÷ 180 × 100, or 16.67%. The recovery heart rate is 83.33% of the recorded peak.
If the same peak is paired with a 2-minute reading of 130 bpm, the drop is 50 bpm, or 27.78%. The larger number does not make the two results directly comparable because the measurement intervals differ.
Why This Calculator Has No Universal Rating
Published studies have used particular exercise tests, participant groups, recovery procedures, follow-up outcomes, and thresholds. For example, the often-cited 1-minute work by Cole and colleagues used symptom-limited clinical exercise testing followed by a specific active recovery procedure. Other work used a 2-minute definition and a different setting.
Those study cutoffs are not universal consumer pass/fail lines. This calculator deliberately does not label a result normal, abnormal, good, poor, safe, or unsafe. A threshold should be interpreted only by someone qualified to determine that the research protocol and clinical context actually match the person and test being assessed.
Measurement and Safety Limits
Use the same exercise mode, peak definition, interval timer, recovery movement and posture, environment, and heart-rate device for repeat comparisons. Fitness, fatigue, temperature, hydration, illness, stress, and medicines—including medicines that alter heart rate—can change the value. Wearable or hand-sensor artifacts should be checked before treating a reading as valid.
This calculation is not a diagnosis or emergency screen. It cannot determine whether exercise is safe or explain an unexpected response. Stop exercise and seek urgent medical help for chest discomfort, fainting, severe or unusual shortness of breath, or other alarming symptoms. Discuss unexpected values, symptoms, heart conditions, or heart-rate-altering medicines with an appropriate clinician instead of changing treatment or exercise solely from this result.
