Rug Size Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the size of a rug: 

RS = ( L + 8) , (W+ 8)
  • Where RS is your rug size in length and width (inches)
  • L is the length of the furniture (inches)
  • W is the width of the furniture (inches)

To calculate the rug size, add 8 inches to the length and 8 inches to the width.

How big should a rug be?

The most common suggestion for rug sizing is the rug needs to be 8 inches larger in both length and width than the furniture or area that it is going under.

This will lead to the best overall look and the proper amount of rug so the furniture will be completely on the rug.

How do you calculate rug size?

The following example outlines the steps needed to calculate a rug size:

First, determine the length of the furniture or area. In this case, we are looking at a couch that has a length of 30 inches.

Next, determine the width of the furniture or area. In this example, the width is measured to be 20 inches.

Finally, calculate the rug size using the formula above. Add 8 inches to each the length and width of the couch.

RS = ( L + 8) , (W+ 8)

RS = ( 30 + 8) , (20+ 8)

RS = 38″ X 28″
