Scrap Rate Formula

The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Scrap Rate.

SCRAP = WS / WM * 100
  • Where SCRAP is the Scrap Rate (%)
  • WS is the total weight or units of scrap 
  • WM is the total weight or units of material 

To calculate the scrap rate, divide the weight or units of scrap by the total weight or units of material, then multiply by 100.

How to Calculate Scrap Rate?

The following example problems outline how to calculate Scrap Rate.

Example Problem #1:

  1. First, determine the total weight of scrap.
    • The total weight of scrap is given as: 300.
  2. Next, determine the total weight of material.
    • The total weight of material is provided as: 600.
  3. Finally, calculate the Scrap Rate using the equation above: 

SCRAP = WS / WM * 100

The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.

SCRAP = 300 / 600 * 100 = 50.00 (%)
