The following two example problems outline the steps and information needed to calculate the Scrap Rate.

- WS is the total weight or units of scrap
- WM is the total weight or units of material
To calculate the scrap rate, divide the weight or units of scrap by the total weight or units of material, then multiply by 100.
How to Calculate Scrap Rate?
The following example problems outline how to calculate Scrap Rate.
Example Problem #1:
- First, determine the total weight of scrap.
- The total weight of scrap is given as 300.
- Next, determine the total weight of material.
- The total weight of material is provided as 600.
- Finally, calculate the Scrap Rate using the equation above:
SCRAP = WS / WM * 100
The values provided above are inserted into the equation below and computed.
SCRAP = 300 / 600 * 100 = 50.00 (%)
Example Problem #2:
For this problem, the variables required are provided below:
total weight of scrap = 200
total weight of material = 1000
The scrap rate is 200 / 1000 × 100 = 20%.
