Check a versioned 2026 wetsuit status from the selected governing rules, race category, swim distance when applicable, and official water temperature.
What the Rules Lookup Returns
The calculator applies the selected 2026 rulebook, athlete or race category, swim distance when that row varies by distance, and official water temperature. It returns exactly one status: mandatory, permitted or optional, conditional with the named consequence, or prohibited.
| Rule row | Mandatory | Permitted or optional | Conditional or prohibited |
|---|---|---|---|
| World Triathlon elite, 1,500 m or shorter | 15.9 °C and below | Above 15.9 °C and below 20.0 °C | Prohibited at 20.0 °C and above |
| World Triathlon Age Group through 55–59, longer than 1,500 m | 15.9 °C and below | Above 15.9 °C and below 24.6 °C | Prohibited at 24.6 °C and above |
| IRONMAN Age Group, relay, or Open | Below 16.0 °C | 16.0 °C through 24.5 °C | Conditional above 24.5 °C through 28.8 °C; prohibited above 28.8 °C |
| USA Triathlon other races or waves | 60.6 °F and below | 60.7 °F to below 78.0 °F | Restricted at 78.0 °F to below 84.0 °F; prohibited at 84.0 °F and above |
Why the Native Rule Unit Matters
World Triathlon and IRONMAN thresholds are evaluated in Celsius. The USA Triathlon all-other-races row is evaluated at its stated Fahrenheit boundaries. Comparing in the rule’s native unit protects exact values such as 60.6 °F, 78.0 °F, and 84.0 °F from being shifted by a rounded conversion.
Boundary Precedence
The lookup evaluates mandatory first, then prohibited, then conditional, and finally permitted or optional. This preserves exact boundaries. For example, 22.0 °C is prohibited for a World Triathlon Age Group swim of 1,500 meters, while 21.9 °C is optional. Under the IRONMAN Age Group row, 24.5 °C is permitted and 24.6 °C enters the conditional band.
Categories and Distance
Distance appears only when the selected rule row changes at 1,500 meters. Category options also change with the rulebook so mutually exclusive groups are never shown together. Results repeat the category, edition, native cutoff, converted temperature, applicable distance, and maximum thickness when locked in the selected rules.
Assumptions and Limitations
This calculator records the cited 2026 general rules. It cannot know an event-specific modification, water-quality decision, shortened swim, separate wave availability, or a later rule revision. The official measurement and the race official’s announcement control. Recheck the current event communication and governing document before race day.
