How the VAM Calculator Works
VAM means vertical ascent in meters per hour. It isolates how quickly elevation is gained, making climbs of different lengths easier to compare on one vertical-rate scale.
The calculator converts feet to meters when necessary, converts elapsed time to decimal hours, and divides gain by time. Time and gain modes use exact algebraic rearrangements.
Formula and Method
Formula: VAM = vertical gain in meters / elapsed hours
Climb time hours = gain / VAM. Elevation gain = VAM x hours. Horizontal distance and road speed do not enter the definition.
Choosing the Right Inputs
Use positive climbing elevation only and an elapsed time covering the same segment. Decide consistently whether stopped time is included when comparing attempts.

Understanding Your Results
VAM, time, or gain leads depending on the selected target. Supporting outputs show metric and imperial gain rates plus vertical speed per minute.
Higher VAM means faster upward progress. It does not automatically mean more power because rider mass, bicycle mass, grade, aero drag, rolling resistance, and conditions also matter.
Worked Example
Climbing 800 meters in 45 minutes yields about 1,067 m/h. At 900 m/h, gaining 1,200 meters takes 1 hour 20 minutes.
Common Mistakes
Do not use total route elevation that includes multiple unrelated climbs, divide by minutes without converting to hours, or compare moving time with elapsed time as if they were identical.
Assumptions and Limitations
Elevation sensors and map correction introduce error. VAM alone does not model grade changes, descents, wind, drafting, surface, temperature, altitude, or power output.
