Enter the standing reach and jump height into the calculator to determine the vertical reach. This calculator helps athletes and coaches assess jumping ability.

Vertical Reach Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the vertical reach.

VR = SR + JH

Variables:

  • VR is the vertical reach (inches)
  • SR is the standing reach (inches)
  • JH is the jump height (inches)

To calculate the vertical reach, add the standing reach to the jump height.

What is Vertical Reach?

Vertical reach is the maximum height an individual can reach with their hand while jumping, starting from a standing position. It is a measure of an athlete’s ability to elevate off the ground and is commonly used in sports like basketball and volleyball to assess players’ potential for blocking, rebounding, and spiking.

How to Calculate Vertical Reach?

The following steps outline how to calculate the Vertical Reach.

  1. First, measure the standing reach (SR) in inches.
  2. Next, measure the jump height (JH) in inches. This is the difference between the maximum height reached while jumping and the standing reach.
  3. Use the formula from above = VR = SR + JH.
  4. Finally, calculate the Vertical Reach (VR) in inches.
  5. After inserting the variables and calculating the result, check your answer with the calculator above.

Example Problem :

Use the following variables as an example problem to test your knowledge.

standing reach (SR) = 90 inches

jump height (JH) = 30 inches
