Enter either the weight of a barbell lunge load or the weight of dumbbells (per hand) to estimate an equivalent starting-point conversion. This calculator can also estimate dumbbell lunges from barbell lunges.
Safety & use: This tool provides a rough starting-point estimate only. Warm up and test with lighter loads first, adjust based on form and perceived exertion, and avoid using it to set 1RM attempts. Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or instability; consult a qualified clinician or coach if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are returning from injury/surgery.

Barbell Lunge to Dumbbell Lunge Estimated Conversion Formula
The following formula is a simple starting-point estimate. Because technique and stability demands vary between setups, the best conversion factor can differ by person—use the calculator’s adjustable CF to better match your experience.
DL = BL / (2 × CF)
Variables:
- DL is the Dumbbell Lunge weight per hand
- BL is the Barbell Lunge weight (total loaded bar)
- CF is the conversion factor (default 1.15; adjust as needed)
To estimate the equivalent dumbbell lunge weight per hand, divide the barbell weight by two and then by the conversion factor. To estimate the barbell lunge weight from a given dumbbell weight (per hand), multiply the dumbbell weight by two and then by the conversion factor.
| Dumbbell per hand (kg) | Barbell (kg) |
|---|---|
| 2.5 | 5.75 |
| 5 | 11.50 |
| 7.5 | 17.25 |
| 10 | 23.00 |
| 12.5 | 28.75 |
| 15 | 34.50 |
| 17.5 | 40.25 |
| 20 | 46.00 |
| 22.5 | 51.75 |
| 25 | 57.50 |
| 27.5 | 63.25 |
| 30 | 69.00 |
| 32.5 | 74.75 |
| 35 | 80.50 |
| 37.5 | 86.25 |
| 40 | 92.00 |
| 42.5 | 97.75 |
| 45 | 103.50 |
| 47.5 | 109.25 |
| 50 | 115.00 |

How to Estimate the Dumbbell Lunge Equivalent?
Follow these steps:
- Measure the weight used in the Barbell Lunge (BL, total loaded bar) or the Dumbbell Lunge (DL per hand).
- If using dumbbells, estimate the equivalent barbell load as: BL = DL × 2 × CF.
- If using a barbell, estimate the equivalent dumbbell weight per hand as: DL = BL / (2 × CF).
- Verify your result using the calculator above, then adjust based on control, balance, and form.
Example Problem:
If the Barbell Lunge Weight (BL) is 100 pounds and CF = 1.15, then:
Dumbbell Lunge Weight per hand (DL) = 100 / (2 × 1.15) = 100 / 2.3 ≈ 43.48 pounds
