Wedding Vendor Tip Formula
The calculator combines percentage-based tips for cost-driven services with flat tips for vendors who are easier to budget by a fixed amount.
For each percentage-based vendor:
Vendor Tip_i = Vendor Cost_i * Vendor Tip Rate_i
Total planned vendor tips:
Total Tips = Sum of Percentage-Based Tips + Sum of Flat Tips
Budget remaining:
Remaining Budget = Total Tip Budget - Total Planned Tips
Variables:
- Vendor Cost_i is the eligible amount for one vendor category
- Vendor Tip Rate_i is the selected percentage written as a decimal
- Flat Tips are direct dollar amounts for vendors such as a planner, photographer, DJ, band, or officiant
- Remaining Budget is negative when planned tips exceed the budget
The form separates catering, bar, transportation, and hair or makeup because these are often planned as a percentage. Planner, photo or video, music, officiant, and other tips are entered as flat amounts. Enter zero for a category that does not apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I calculate a wedding tip before or after tax?
Use the eligible service amount specified by the vendor contract or your chosen etiquette plan. The calculator does not add tax automatically, so enter the vendor cost that you intend to use as the tip base.
What if a service charge is already in the contract?
Review whether it is an administrative fee, a gratuity distributed to staff, or another charge. Do not assume every service charge reaches the workers, but also avoid duplicating a gratuity that is already included.
Do I need to tip every wedding vendor?
No universal formula applies to every vendor or region. Use the calculator to organize the amounts you decide are appropriate after considering contracts, ownership, service quality, and local custom.
