The following formula is used to calculate the average shot length for a given total length and number of shots.

ASL = TL / NS

Variables:

  • ASL is the average shot length in the same time unit as TL
  • TL is the total length of the video in minutes
  • NS is the number of shots

To calculate the average shot length, divide the total length of the video by the number of shots. The calculator reports seconds; multiply minutes by 60 first. Timecode modes distinguish elapsed MM:SS or HH:MM:SS from four-part non-drop-frame HH:MM:SS:FF labels. Fractional frame-rate presets use 24000/1001, 30000/1001, or 60000/1001 fps. NDF labels count from zero and are not elapsed clock times at these rates; drop-frame labels are unsupported. High-frame-rate labels count every frame.

Standard deviation uses the full supplied population. Shots per minute measures cutting frequency, not a universal pace rating. A reverse-solved fractional shot count is an implied ratio; actual shots are whole units.
