Baseball Magic Number Formula
A magic number measures how many combined wins by the leading team and losses by one chasing team are needed to make the chase mathematically impossible. The standard two-team formula is:
Each future leader win reduces the number by one. Each future challenger loss also reduces it by one. A value of zero means the leader has clinched over that challenger under this arithmetic.
Example
In a 162-game season, a leader with 90 wins against a challenger with 65 losses has a magic number of 8: 162 + 1 - 90 - 65 = 8. Eight leader wins, eight challenger losses, or any combination totaling eight completes that comparison.
Using Combination Mode
If the current magic number is known, combination mode shows how many leader wins remain after assigning a projected number of challenger losses. For a magic number of 8 and three projected challenger losses, five leader wins complete the combination.
Important Race Details
- Calculate the number separately for each remaining contender.
- Wild-card races can involve several teams and different qualification positions.
- Official tiebreaking procedures can affect whether a tie in the standings is sufficient.
- Postponed games and unequal games played do not change the standard formula, but they change when outcomes become available.
