Enter your body weight and shivering time to calculate your calories burned while shivering. At a moderate shivering pace, a 150 lb person burns about 4.2 calories per minute.
Calories Burned Shivering Formula
The calculator uses body weight, shivering time, and a shivering factor.
C = BW * t * f
Variables:
- C = calories burned
- BW = body weight
- t = shivering time in minutes
- f = shivering factor
In basic mode, the calculator uses a moderate shivering factor with body weight entered in pounds. In advanced mode, you can choose light, moderate, or strong shivering and use pounds or kilograms.
Shivering Factors
- Light: 0.0159 per lb per minute or 0.0350 per kg per minute
- Moderate: 0.0278 per lb per minute or 0.0613 per kg per minute
- Strong: 0.0397 per lb per minute or 0.0875 per kg per minute
Calories Burned per Minute at Moderate Shivering
- 120 lb: 3.34 calories per minute
- 150 lb: 4.17 calories per minute
- 180 lb: 5.00 calories per minute
- 200 lb: 5.56 calories per minute
What is Shivering?
Shivering is a rapid, involuntary muscle response that helps your body produce heat when you get cold. Because the muscles are contracting over and over, calorie use rises as shivering lasts longer and becomes more intense.
How to Calculate Calories Burned While Shivering
- Enter your body weight.
- Enter your shivering time in minutes.
- In advanced mode, choose your weight unit and shivering level.
- Multiply body weight by minutes and the matching shivering factor.
Example
A 150 lb person shivering for 20 minutes in basic mode burns:
C = 150 * 20 * 0.0278 = 83.40
A 70 kg person shivering strongly for 15 minutes in advanced mode burns:
C = 70 * 15 * 0.0875 = 91.88
