CFM Per Ton Formula
The following formula is used to calculate the total cubic feet per minute per ton of cooling.
- Where CFPT is the cubic feet per minute per ton
- CFM is the cubic feet per minute
- C is the tonnage of cooling.
To calculate CFM per ton, divide the volumetric flow in cubic feet per minute by the tonnage of cooling.

What is CFM per ton?
CFM per ton is airflow in cubic feet per minute divided by cooling capacity in US refrigeration tons. Use values for the same equipment and operating conditions; the ratio alone does not establish cooling performance.
Example Problem
How to calculate CFM per ton?
First, determine the total cubic feet per minute of air moving through an area. In this example, the fans are moving the air at a rate of 450 CFM.
Next, determine the total tonnage of cooling required for that air. In this case, we will use an average of 4 tons.
Finally, calculate the CFM per ton using the formula above:
CFPT = CFM / C
CFPT = 450 / 4
CFPT = 112.5 CFM /ton. This arithmetic example is not a design recommendation; verify airflow and capacity ratings against equipment commissioning data.
