Cornhole Cancellation Formula

Raw round points = 3 × hole bags + board bags. Award only the positive difference between the teams’ raw points.

Count Final Bag Positions

Wait until both teams have thrown all four bags. Enter bags in the hole separately from bags still resting on the board. A bag that started on the board but was knocked into the hole belongs only in the hole count. A bag removed as a foul or otherwise not eligible to score should not appear in either scoring count. The tool treats the rest of the four bags as non-scoring.

Why Only One Team Adds Points

Each team’s raw score describes its bag values before cancellation. The lower raw total cancels an equal number of the opponent’s points. If Team A has seven raw points and Team B has five, Team A adds two and Team B adds zero. When the raw totals tie, both teams add zero, even if both landed several bags in the hole.

Enter Scores Before the Round

The prior scores must be between zero and 20 because the selected format ends after a completed round brings a team to at least 21. Entering a prior score of 21 or higher would mean the game was already over. This is a one-round calculator: the updated totals are shown in the result, but repeated clicks do not silently add the same round again.

Worked Example

Team A has two hole bags and one board bag: 3 × 2 + 1 = 7. Team B has one hole bag and two board bags: 3 × 1 + 2 = 5. The difference is two points for A. With prior scores A 10 and B 8, the updated score is A 12 and B 8. Each team also has one non-scoring bag, bringing its count to four.

Reaching or Exceeding 21

A team on 20 that earns a three-point cancellation difference finishes on 23 and wins under this format. There is no penalty for exceeding 21 and no requirement to win by two. If your group uses an exact-score rollback or another house variation, agree on it before play; those variations are not implemented here.

Bounds That Catch Counting Errors

Hole and board counts must be whole numbers from zero to four, and their sum cannot exceed four for either team. Four hole bags produce the largest raw round total, 12. Cancellation can reduce that to any smaller awarded total, including zero. The updated score is bounded by the prior score plus the awarded round points, rather than being clamped to 21.

Keep raw round points distinct from awarded points in a scorebook. The result displays both so the arithmetic can be checked before the next round begins.
