8-Ball Race Lookup Method

Race targets = the chart entry for Player A’s skill level and Player B’s skill level. Remaining wins = target − games already won.

Use Assigned Skill Levels

Select each player’s current assigned skill level from two through seven. These are inputs, not outputs. The calculator reads the singles chart and does not estimate a level from wins, innings, defensive shots, or recent form. A number from another rating system cannot be substituted just because it uses a similar scale.

Read the Race in Player Order

Player A’s level selects the row; Player B’s level selects the column. The first number is A’s required wins and the second is B’s. A 2/5 result therefore means A must win two games before B wins five. Reversing the players should reverse the targets. Keeping names or team labels consistent with the scorebook prevents an otherwise correct lookup being applied to the wrong player.

Worked Example

Player A at level four against Player B at level seven has a 2/5 race in the referenced singles chart. If A has one win and B has three, A needs one more game and B needs two. The match can take at most 2 + 5 − 1 = 6 games before one player reaches the target. That maximum is a game count, not an estimate of elapsed match time.

Equal Levels Still Require a Lookup

Do not assume a player always races to their skill-level number. In the chart, level three against level three is 2/2, level four against level four is 3/3, and level seven against level seven is 5/5. Unequal pairings also have exceptions, which is why the calculator uses the chart rather than a simple difference formula.

Track Games Already Won

Enter whole game wins from zero up to the relevant target. A player who has reached the target is shown as having completed the race. Both players cannot simultaneously have reached their target in one completed match, so that entry is rejected. The calculator does not award league match points, handle forfeits, or decide who breaks next.

What the Chart Does Not Tell You

The handicap race describes the win requirement under a named format. It does not calculate either player’s probability of winning, skill improvement, or expected margin. A two-game lead has a different meaning in different races, so use the remaining-wins rows rather than comparing raw wins without their targets.

Check the Match Format

This is an unofficial reference to the published APA 8-ball singles Games Must Win chart viewed in September 2026. Confirm the current scoresheet and applicable local rules. Doubles uses combined levels and a separate chart, and 9-ball uses points rather than this games-won race. Those formats, Masters, and other handicap systems are outside this tool’s scope.
