How a Double-Out Checkout Works

Sum of the route’s dart values = remaining score; the final dart must be a double or inner bull.

Use the points remaining before your next dart, rather than the points scored in the previous visit. Select how many darts are still available in this visit. If you have already thrown one dart, choose two. The result can finish earlier than the limit: a one-dart double is preferred even when you have three darts available. Zero means the score is already cleared; one point has no double-out finish.

Read the Route Notation

S20 means single 20 for 20 points, D20 means double 20 for 40, and T20 means treble 20 for 60. OB is the 25-point outer bull. Bull is the 50-point inner bull, which can serve as double 25 on the last dart. Each substituted step shows the score after that dart, so you can check the route without memorizing the abbreviations.

How Suggested Routes Are Ordered

The calculator enumerates legal ordered sequences and ranks the shortest first. Within the same length it prefers your chosen double, if available. Next comes the fixed finish order: D20, D16, D18, D12, D10, D8, D4, D2, D1, D6, D14, D15, D17, D19, D11, D9, D7, D5, D3, D13, then Bull. Remaining ties penalize an earlier bull or outer bull by three and an earlier double by one; other scoring shots receive zero. Stable generation order resolves the remaining ties.

Worked Examples

For 170 with three darts, T20, T20, Bull gives 60 + 60 + 50 = 170. The running remainder is 110, then 50, then zero. With only two darts available, 170 has no finish. For 100 with two darts and a D20 preference, T20 followed by D20 gives 60 + 40 = 100. A score of 40 needs only D20.

Why Some Scores Have No Checkout

A high score can be below the largest three-dart finish yet still be impossible. The available segment values and the final-double requirement both matter. Scores 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162, and 159 have no three-dart double-out route. The calculator reports that result directly instead of displaying a scoring sequence that ends on a single.

Choose a Route You Can Execute

The first route is a transparent ordering choice, not a prediction of your success rate. Consider the double you practice and the risk of a neighboring segment. A miss changes both the remainder and the number of darts available; enter those new values for a fresh calculation. The alternatives are complete routes from the entered position, not contingency instructions after a miss.

Scope and Limitations

This tool uses the standard numbered board and double-out format. It does not enforce double-in, master-out, team order, or a full leg scoreboard. A legal numerical route does not prove the darts actually stayed in the board or satisfy every match condition. The route count includes different orders and different segments with the same numerical value; it is not a count of equally likely choices.
