Cost Per Visit Formula

The basic cost per visit formula divides the total cost by the number of visits:

CPV = TC / V
  • CPV = cost per visit, in dollars per visit
  • TC = total cost, in dollars
  • V = number of visits

The same relationship can be rearranged to calculate the other missing values:

TC = V * CPV
V = TC / CPV
  • Calculate cost per visit: Enter total cost and number of visits. The result shows the average cost for each visit.
  • Calculate total cost: Enter number of visits and cost per visit. The result shows the total amount spent.
  • Calculate number of visits: Enter total cost and cost per visit. The result shows how many visits the total cost represents.

Common Cost Per Visit Inputs

Cost per visit can be used for customer visits, patient visits, website visits, service calls, store visits, or appointment-based costs. The key is to keep the total cost and visit count for the same time period.

Use Case Total Cost Might Include Visit Count Means
Marketing campaign Ad spend, agency fees, landing page costs Website visits or store visits caused by the campaign
Healthcare clinic Staffing, supplies, rent, equipment, admin costs Patient visits during the period
Service business Labor, travel, materials, overhead Completed service visits or appointments
Retail location Rent, payroll, utilities, advertising Customer visits or foot traffic
Result Pattern What It Usually Means
Cost per visit decreases as visits increase Fixed costs are being spread across more visits.
Cost per visit increases Costs rose, visit volume fell, or both happened.
Cost per visit stays stable Costs and visits are changing at a similar rate.

Example Cost Per Visit Calculations

Example 1: Calculate cost per visit

You spent $2,400 during a month and received 300 visits.

CPV = TC / V
CPV = 2400 / 300 = 8

The cost per visit is $8.00 per visit.

Example 2: Calculate total cost

You had 450 visits and each visit cost $12.50 on average.

TC = V * CPV
TC = 450 * 12.50 = 5625

The total cost is $5,625.00.

Cost Per Visit FAQ

What should be included in total cost?

Include the costs that are directly related to the visits you are measuring. For example, if you are measuring marketing cost per website visit, total cost may include ad spend, platform fees, design costs, and campaign management costs. If you are measuring clinic cost per patient visit, total cost may include staff, supplies, rent, utilities, and administrative expenses for the same period.

Can the number of visits be a decimal?

In most real situations, visits are whole numbers. However, the calculator may return a decimal when solving for number of visits from total cost and cost per visit. That result means the exact mathematical value. If you need a practical visit count, round it based on your use case.

Why does cost per visit change when visit volume changes?

Cost per visit often changes because some costs are fixed. Rent, salaries, software, and equipment may stay the same even when visits go up or down. When more visits share the same fixed cost, the average cost per visit usually decreases. When fewer visits share the same cost, the average cost per visit usually increases.
