Enter the total number of times an item has dropped and the number of attempts to get that item to determine the drop chance.

Drop Chance Formula

The following formula is used to calculate the drop chance of an item in a video game.

DC = DI / A *100
  • Where DC is the drop chance (%)
  • DI is the number if times the item has dropped
  • A is the number of attempts to get that item (i.e. number of times killing a monster)

To calculate a drop chance, divide the number of drops by the number of attempts, then multiply by 100.

What is drop chance?

Definition:

A drop chance is a term used in video games to describe the rate at which a player will receive an item on average per number of attempts.

The word “drop” comes from the saying that the items you get from killing a monster/unit are “dropped” by that unit.

How to calculate a drop chance?

Example:

The following example problem outlines the steps and information needed to calculate a drop chance.

First, set up an experiment where you kill a unit a certain number of times. In this example, the number of attempts will be 500.

Next, measure the number of times an item has dropped through all of the attempts. In this case, the number of dropped items was 3.

Finally, calculate the drop chance using the formula above:

DC = #DI / A *100

DC = 3 / 500 *100

DC = .6% drop chance
