Catch Rate Formula
Football catch rate measures receptions as a percentage of credited targets:
NFL Next Gen Stats receiving tables publish receptions, targets, and catch percentage together. The inputs should come from the same provider because unusual target attribution can vary.
Targets Without a Reception
The calculator also subtracts receptions from targets. This remainder can include incomplete throws, interceptions on passes directed toward the player, drops, deflections, or other credited targets that did not become receptions. Catch rate alone does not identify the cause.
Next-Target Scenarios
A catch on the next target increases both receptions and targets by one. A non-catch increases only targets. Showing both outcomes makes small-sample sensitivity immediately visible.
Receptions Needed for a Target Rate
Target mode uses a fixed planned target total:
The calculator rounds upward because receptions are whole outcomes. It then recomputes the achieved rate so a fractional threshold is never presented as an attainable box-score line.
Example
A receiver with 66 receptions on 90 targets has a catch rate of 73.33 percent. There are 24 targets without a reception. A target of 67 percent across 75 targets requires 50.25 mathematical receptions, so at least 51 receptions are needed; 51 of 75 is 68 percent.
Catch Rate Is Not Catch Difficulty
Depth of target, separation, route type, throw placement, defender proximity, and completion probability all affect the chance of a catch. NFL Next Gen Stats uses expected catch and completion concepts to add context. The basic rate treats every credited target equally.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Receptions cannot exceed targets, and targets must be greater than zero to calculate a rate.
- The metric does not assign responsibility for an incompletion to the passer, receiver, defender, or game conditions.
- Comparisons are more useful when target depth, role, position, and sample size are similar.
- Target mode calculates the minimum receptions for a fixed volume; it does not forecast volume or player performance.
