Calculate a football player’s percentage of total team targets, or find the minimum whole player-target count needed for a chosen share of planned team volume.
Target Share Formula
In football receiving analysis, target share is the percentage of a team’s total credited targets directed to one player:
NFL Fantasy has described target share as the percentage of the team’s targets that a player received. Both counts must cover the same games and come from a consistent data source.
Team Targets Are the Denominator
Do not automatically replace team targets with pass attempts. A target is attributed to an intended receiver, while official attempts can include plays whose target treatment differs by provider, including some throwaways, spikes, or unusual plays. Use a published team-target total or sum the same provider’s player targets for the selected scope.
Targets Assigned to Other Players
The calculator subtracts player targets from the team total to show how much receiving opportunity went elsewhere. This is volume context; it says nothing by itself about depth, quality, or catchability.
Finding Player Targets for a Planned Share
Target mode multiplies a chosen share by planned team volume:
Because targets are whole credited events, the result rounds upward and the achieved share is recalculated.
Example
A player with 30 of a team’s 120 targets has a 25 percent share, leaving 90 targets for all other players. A 22.5 percent goal across 160 team targets requires exactly 36 player targets.
Target Share vs. Catch Rate
Target share measures opportunity within a team. Catch rate measures receptions per player target. A player can have a large share and a modest catch rate, or a small share and a high catch rate. Use both to separate volume from outcomes.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Player and team target totals must use the same provider, games, and postseason treatment.
- The metric does not include routes run, snaps, air yards, target depth, red-zone usage, or completion probability.
- Role changes and missed games can distort full-season comparisons.
- Target mode allocates a fixed planned total; it does not forecast actual volume.
