Heart-Rate Workout Calorie Formula Methods

This calculator offers two transparent workflows. The recommended workflow uses an observed average heart rate from a monitor summary. The lower-confidence workflow uses time in five heart-rate zones and assigns one representative heart rate to each zone. Neither workflow reproduces a wearable, studio platform, or laboratory measurement.

Published Average-Heart-Rate Equations

Keytel and colleagues published two coefficient sets for estimating energy expenditure from heart rate, body mass, and age. The paper labeled the equations by male and female study groups. The calculator preserves those labels as published equation sets rather than treating them as an inference about identity.

Male kJ / min = - 55.0969 + 0.6309(HR) + 0.1988(kg) + 0.2017(age)
Female kJ / min = - 20.4022 + 0.4472(HR) - 0.1263(kg) + 0.074(age)
kcal / min = (kJ / min) / (4.184)

The default displays the ordered outputs from both equations as a range. That range is not a confidence interval and should not be read as a formal error bound. Selecting one equation shows only that published coefficient set.

Validation Population Matters

The source study included 115 regularly exercising adults, ages 18 to 45 and body masses from 47 to 120 kg. Testing used steady-state treadmill or cycle stages near 57%, 77%, and 90% of maximal heart rate. The no-fitness-measure model explained 73.4% of variance in that sample. Results outside those age, mass, intensity, or exercise-mode conditions are extrapolations.

Mixed running, rowing, and resistance intervals can produce a different heart-rate-to-energy relationship than the steady stages used to develop the equations. Heat, hydration, fitness, stress, medication, health conditions, and optical-sensor error can also change heart rate independently of energy expenditure.

Zone-Minute Approximation

Zone mode uses five generic boundaries: 50-60%, 61-70%, 71-83%, 84-91%, and 92-100% of supplied maximum heart rate. The calculator uses representative values of 55%, 65.5%, 77%, 87.5%, and 96% respectively:

One midpoint cannot capture every heartbeat within a zone, so this method is less precise than an observed session-average heart rate. Zone 5 uses 96% of maximum HR, beyond the study's approximate 90% upper stage, and is explicitly flagged as extrapolation.

Entered and Age-Estimated Maximum Heart Rate

An entered measured or platform-personalized maximum takes priority. If it is unavailable, the calculator can use the Tanaka equation of 208 minus 0.7 times age. Age prediction has substantial individual error, so the result always identifies an estimated maximum.

High-Zone Minutes Are Not Calories

The calculator reports minutes in Zones 4 and 5 as high-zone minutes. A branded fitness system may use a special name for those minutes, but a minute in a zone is not a calorie unit. This calculator never multiplies a point or high-zone minute by a calorie constant.

Target-Time Mode

Target mode is available only with observed average heart rate. It divides target total calories by each valid published kcal-per-minute estimate and reports equivalent time at the same average heart rate. It does not reverse-solve zone minutes and is not a workout prescription.

Worked Example

For a 150 lb person, age 35, with an observed average heart rate of 145 bpm for 60 minutes, the published female equation produces about 9.187 kcal/min and 551.2 kcal. The published male equation produces about 13.616 kcal/min and 817.0 kcal. The wide default model range is a reason to avoid measurement-level precision. The standardized one-MET resting amount over the hour is about 71.4 kcal.
