Calculate stride length from height or height from stride length using sex-based factors for men and women in inches, feet, cm, or m.
Stride Length From Height Formula
This calculator estimates stride length from height and selected sex. In this context, stride length means the distance from one foot strike to the next strike of the same foot. The formula is proportional; input and result units can be selected independently. Coefficients 0.830 and 0.826 are retained walking rules of thumb, not individual gait measurements.
- SLH = estimated stride length
- H = height
- The coefficient changes slightly based on the selected sex in the calculator.
- This is an estimate meant for general walking analysis, fitness tracking, and quick conversions.
Reverse Formula for Estimating Height
If you already know stride length and want to estimate height, rearrange the equation like this:
Stride Length vs. Step Length
Stride length and step length are not the same. A step length is one single step, while a stride length covers two steps. If you are comparing values from a treadmill, pedometer, smartwatch, or running app, make sure you are using the correct measurement.
How to Use the Calculator
- Choose the quantity to calculate and the male or female coefficient.
- Enter a known height to estimate stride length, or enter a known stride length to estimate height.
- Choose the unit you want to work with: in, ft, cm, or m.
- Click Calculate to generate the missing value.
- If you need step length instead of stride length, divide the stride result by 2.
Examples
Example 1: A woman with a height of 65 inches.
The estimated stride length is 53.69 inches.
Example 2: A man with a measured stride length of 150 cm.
The estimated height is 180.72 cm.
Quick Reference Table
| Height | Estimated Stride Length (Men) | Estimated Stride Length (Women) |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in | 49.80 in | 49.56 in |
| 66 in | 54.78 in | 54.52 in |
| 72 in | 59.76 in | 59.47 in |
What Affects Real-World Stride Length?
The calculator gives a practical estimate, but actual stride length can vary from person to person. Common factors include:
- Walking speed: faster movement usually increases stride length.
- Running vs. walking: running stride is often longer than walking stride.
- Leg length and body proportions: people with the same height can still have different gait patterns.
- Terrain: hills, trails, and uneven ground often shorten natural stride.
- Footwear: shoes can change comfort, cadence, and stride mechanics.
- Fatigue or mobility limitations: tiredness, injury, or reduced range of motion can reduce stride length.
For distance tracking, this calculator is useful for getting a fast estimate. For the most accurate fitness or walking data, measure your actual stride over a known distance and compare it against the estimate.
