Compare kayak paddle lengths from your height and kayak width using the Aqua Bound sizing chart.
Kayak Paddle Length Method
Suggested comparison size = chart entry for paddler height and kayak width + selected fit adjustment.
Measure Height and Boat Width
Enter your standing height and the kayak’s maximum width, with a unit beside each measurement. The tool converts both to inches before reading the chart and reports paddle length in centimeters. Measure the boat itself if its specification is unavailable. This chart is intended for recreational, touring, and performance kayaks; whitewater uses a different sizing approach.
How the Chart Is Applied
The 2025 Aqua Bound chart has four height groups and four kayak-width groups. Each intersection gives a paddle length. The tool returns that entry exactly when both measurements fall inside a listed group. It does not multiply your height by a universal factor, and it does not infer a different paddle length simply because you enter more decimal places.
Measurements Between Chart Groups
The published height labels leave a gap between 66 and 67 inches. The width labels leave a gap between 27.75 and 28 inches. For values strictly within a gap, the calculator checks both neighboring groups and reports the lowest and highest resulting recommendation. If both measurements fall in gaps, it considers all four adjacent intersections. Identical recommendations collapse to one size. This retains the chart’s uncertainty without creating an unsupported cutoff or interpolated paddle size.
Worked Examples
A paddler 68 inches tall in a 28-inch-wide kayak matches the 67–72-inch height group and 28–32-inch width group. The chart size is 230 cm, equivalent to about 90.55 inches. Choosing the explicit +5 cm adjustment produces 235 cm. With the same height and a boat width of 27.9 inches, the adjacent width groups give 220 and 230 cm, so the unadjusted comparison is 220–230 cm.
When to Adjust the Starting Size
Aqua Bound suggests considering a longer or shorter size when multiple fit factors point in the same direction. These include stroke angle, paddling pace, seat height, and hull shape. The optional -5 or +5 cm choice is a user-selected trial adjustment; the calculator does not diagnose those factors. A larger adjustment or a different blade may be appropriate for a specific boat, and an adjustable paddle can help compare lengths.
What the Number Does and Does Not Mean
The result is total paddle length, not one blade length, shaft length, or the distance between your hands. A chart-size match does not guarantee comfortable reach. Check hand clearance at the gunwale and whether the blade engages the water naturally during a normal stroke. Compare paddles of the actual blade shape and intended stroke style; two equal overall lengths can feel different.
Limits and Unit Checks
The input limits are 36–96 inches of paddler height and 12–48 inches of kayak width. These are practical calculator limits, not additional manufacturer chart categories. Very small paddlers, unusually wide boats, and high fishing seats deserve individual fitting. One inch equals exactly 2.54 cm, and one foot equals 12 inches. Select feet only for a decimal-foot measurement: 5.5 ft means 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in.
