SUP Volume Reference Formula
Reference volume (L) = [rider mass (kg) + added load (kg)] × selected volume factor (L/kg).
Choose a Sizing Method
The beginner inflatable method uses 2 liters per kilogram as a starting reference. Starboard gives a beginner inflatable guideline of at least twice rider kilograms in board liters. This calculator also includes the added load you enter in that arithmetic. The custom method lets an experienced paddler enter a chosen factor from 1 to 5 L/kg. It does not assign a universal intermediate or advanced factor, because board construction and intended use matter.
Count the Load Consistently
Enter the rider’s body weight and the additional load in separate fields. Added load can include carried equipment and other weight that the board must support. Use kilograms or pounds independently for each field. Do not enter the same item in both fields. The sum is an input to the volume-reference arithmetic; it is not the manufacturer’s certified maximum payload and does not include an inferred rating for the board.
Worked Example
A 70 kg rider carrying 10 kg of additional load gives 80 kg total. The beginner reference is 80 × 2 = 160 L. If the added load rises to 15 kg, the same arithmetic gives 170 L. Under a custom 2.5 L/kg factor, the original 80 kg load instead gives 200 L. These examples compare chosen factors and loads; they do not certify that every 160 or 200 L board suits that rider.
Length Depends on the Activity
The length row is a separate reference selected by activity. It does not pretend that rider weight determines a unique length. All-around paddling uses a 10–11 ft guide; touring uses 11.5–14 ft; SUP surfing uses 9–10.5 ft. Each is also shown in meters. The beginner all-around case additionally displays a 32–34 in width reference. Specific products can fall outside these ranges and still serve a suitable rider.
Volume and Rated Capacity Are Different
A board’s liters describe volume. Its rider or payload rating reflects the maker’s intended performance and loading convention. Equal-volume boards can differ in width, outline, stiffness, rail shape, and how they sit in the water. A longer board can improve glide while a wider board can help initial balance, but the whole design controls handling. Read the model’s stated rider or total-load rating and determine what that rating includes before comparing it with your entered load.
Inflatable and Rigid Board Choices
The preset is intended as a beginner inflatable reference. Do not automatically transfer it to an advanced rigid surf SUP, racing design, foil board, or multi-person platform. Inflation pressure and construction affect an inflatable board’s stiffness, while a rigid board’s shaped volume distribution can change how a given number of liters feels. The custom factor is an arithmetic control, not an independent recommendation for any of those categories.
Using the Result to Narrow a Comparison
Use the number to organize a shortlist of boards with suitable manufacturer ratings and activity descriptions, then compare dimensions and try a board when possible. A gear change may increase the reference volume without changing the activity-length row, because those outputs answer different questions. Plan water conditions and immersion protection separately; a sizing result does not establish a safe operating limit for weather, waves, currents, or distance from shore.
